"Using unique and rarely available data on the universe of consumer loans, we document a significant increase in credit availability by both banks and fintechs, along both intensive and extensive margins, and across various borrower profiles. Fintech lenders, in particular, capitalized on the digital transaction data generated by UPI and open data sharing to assess creditworthiness and expand access to credit for the traditionally underserved segments. Finally, our findings underscore that digital payments and Open Banking are highly effective in facilitating access to formal credit by complementing first-time bank accounts for those who were previously excluded from these markets."

"In an increasingly interconnected world, digital inclusion has emerged as a cornerstone of development strategies. Digital India’s overarching goal of transforming the nation into a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy has yielded significant outcomes over the past decade, since the Indian government launched the ambitious “Digital India” programme in 2015. One of the most notable achievements has been the reduction of the digital divide between urban and rural areas and connecting the unconnected. The government, through consistent efforts and successful collaborative partnerships, has hugely bridged the digital divide, enabling millions of rural Indians to access the internet for communication, education, and livelihood opportunities."

"India has become a global example of real-time payments, benefiting from home grown technological innovations like UPI. India's digital transformation will be a game changer for the economic development.

Digitalisation of the Indian economy, along with the increasing use of smartphones in the past few years has propelled cashless transactions and online purchases. According to the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER), India's score on digital prowess has surpasses that of developed nations such as Japan, the United Kingdom and Germany in the aggregate level of digitalisation."
